Deb's Take:
Fun little facts. Rooney Mara's family is really big in the football NFL world. She earned her degree in international social policy and psychology. Her older sister is also an actress.
The reason I looked her up is because she is sort of a freaky actress. I first saw her in Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and now in this movie. I don't know what I expected to find out about her personal life, maybe that she was a troubled teen who lived on the streets, under a bridge, until she was discovered by an agent who gave her a break and she still lives in a small studio apartment in downtown Detroit. HA..look her up, that is so not her story!
Anyway, what I think that says about her, is that she is a pretty good actress, because I truly believed she was a very troubled individual in this movie (as well as Dragon Tattoo). This movie was not what I expected. In fact I had a coat ready in case I needed to hide my face. Not that kind of movie. The other thing, I sort of pride myself on being able to figure out the twists in a movie. This one had me jumping around all over the place, up to the end I wasn't really sure what was going to happen. Like I said, Rooney was good. Jude Law was pretty good too, and Catherine Zeta-Jones really impressed me. I am always a little surprised at her talents.
All that being said, the movie wasn't bad. I think it wove a good thriller weave of webs. I can't say it was anything magnificent, but it was entertaining. Not one that will rate up there with my top 10, but could have been worse!

Tiff's Take:
I was excited about this movie because I LOVED Rooney Mara in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I thought she portrayed Lisbeth Salander perfectly. And Lisbeth Salander is probably one of my favorite fictional characters so it makes it easy to like Rooney Mara too. Following my logic? I know, sometimes I have a hard time separating fiction and reality.
Well, the previews for this leaves you very confused. Who is the bad guy or good guy or what really happens? At least that's how I felt watching them. The movie almost leaves you just as confused until the very end. And even then I think I'm still a little confused. So does the good guy (and by guy I mean guy or girl-I don't want to spoil it) end up being the bad guy when it's all said and done? I'm not an over thinker when it comes to my movie watching so I didn't sit and ponder it too long but this movie definitely keeps you on your toes. Isn't that what makes these movies good?
It was a really interesting story and the actors really played their parts well. Especially Rooney and Jude. Channing Tatum was just okay I guess. His role was more minor then I thought it would be. Honestly his part could have been played by anyone and it wouldn't have made much of a difference. I still love Rooney Mara even if she seems to be drawn to slightly disturbing characters. Maybe that's why I like her. And when it comes to suspenseful thrillers, I think this one hit it right on the head.

2012: Bonus Review: Anna Karenina
Anna Karenina
Genre: Drama
Main Players: Keira Knightley, Jude Law, Aaron Taylor-Johnson
General Gist: Set in the late19th century Russia, a high society, married woman starts having an affair with a much wanted bachelor changing her life dramatically.
Deb's Take:
What a unique movie. The first scene immediately set up a whole different vibe for the film. Sort of a part play/part movie. Just a neat concept. As far as the movie itself. The acting was pretty amazing. Keira and Jude are so good at their roles. Jude Law was most impressive to me, as it seems he can play so many different types of characters and make them all very believable.
The other thing about this movie was that it was the typical love triangle. My Romeo and Juliet side was very satisfied. The whole web of deception, drama, and love was adequately weaved into a horrid mess. Why do I like movies like that?.....Anyway, I think this movie was well done, had some great characters and followed a good storyline. We almost missed seeing this one, and I am glad we didn't!

What a great way to end the year! Seriously, we couldn't have picked a better one to finish with. In my opinion anyway. I knew when I first saw the preview for this that it was right up my alley and I had to see it. But with the way things worked out we were a little late in the game at actually seeing it. Boy am I glad we made it work though.
I'm not sure what to point out first. I really loved everything about it. It was one of those movies that when I start watching it I can tell right away that I'm going to love it and never want it to end. Does that happen to any of you? It was artsy and unique. It was made as if it was on the set of a play in parts then a movie in other scenes. Really well done. Jude Law was fantastically middle aged and ordinary. (Is that really possible?) Keira Knightley was wonderfully torn and heartbroken. Ahhh. Made my heart go pitter pat.
I realize this kind of movie may not be for everyone but for me it was definitely one of the best of the year. Easily.

2012: Week 49: Rise of the Guardians
Rise of the Guardians
Genre: Animation, Adventure
Main Players: Voices of Chris Pine, Alec Baldwin, Jude Law, Isla Fisher, Hugh Jackman
General Gist: The immortal guardians (Jack Frost, Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy, Sandman, and Santa) try to protect all the children against the evil spirit Pitch.
Tiff's Take:
We decided to treat the kids to a movie for week 49. My kids wanted to see this and it looked interesting to me so why not. And I did enjoy it but I wouldn't say it was anything spectacular. I've seen a lot better animated movies but I've also seen a lot worse.
It was an interesting concept and I liked all the characters. All the great voices helped too. But I'll admit it hasn't left a lasting impression since I've seen it a few weeks ago. My kids? My 7 year old seemed to enjoy it and my 4 year old was only mildly distracted at times. Pretty good for a kids movie I'd say.

Deb's Take: I like animated movies when they have a lot of humor for the adults, at least they are my favorite. This movie didn't have a lot of "hidden" adult moments. However, the story was a good concept, and I liked that they combined a group of guardians together that weren't just your traditional characters, (ie: Jack Frost and Tooth Fairy) The movie kept the kids' interest (mine are 9 and 12) and I think the story was laid out well. My kids both said they liked it "a lot" (vs a little). It was good, clean, kid fun!

Week 51: Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
How is it that I get so behind in posting my reviews? I have three movies swirling in my head right now. These last few of the year might be short and sweet.
For week 51 we went and saw Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. I was a big fan of the first one so I was looking forward to this. Russ was a big fan of the first one too so he was actually looking forward to seeing this movie. When he's excited about seeing a movie I'm happy because that means he'll try hard to go with me. So this movie ended up being a date night for us sisters. Love it when it works out that way.
This is the second installment of the Sherlock Holmes movies with Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law. I totally agree with Deb. They have great chemistry together in the movie. I love the humor and wit. Actually, Robert Downey Jr. has good chemistry with Rachel McAdams too even if they didn't have as big of a role this time around. Generally speaking I love Robert Downey Jr.'s humor and he is no exception in this one. I love the visual effects as well with the dark atmosphere and cool slow mo action shots. It all works wonderfully.
Definitely a fun one to see in the theater.
To Sum it up: Good action, good banter and just plain good entertainment.

Week 51: Sherlock Holmes-A Game of Shadows
This movie was a good "take your husband out on a date" movie. I had not seen the first one, but was told it didn't matter. I think it may have helped a little, but I don't think I lost any of the intention by not seeing the first one.
We also got to enjoy the movie with our friends. Thanks for coming with us Steve and Shelley.
The main players: Robert Downey Jr.-He did excellent. Jude Law-Amazing as well. These two had great chemistry and worked well together. Kept me entertained with humor and quirkiness. Roomi Rapace- She did a great job. Excited to see her in a different role to see if she is a great as she seems.
Overall impression: Good movie, lots of adventure, action, and twists and turns. Good couples movie!

Bonus Review: Contagion
My husband and I decided to take in the AMC Cinema Suites last week and went to the movie Contagion. This was a movie Tiff and I were hoping to see, so I decided I would write up a review, hopefully Tiff will get to it as well.
I think the most impressionable thing about this movie wasn't necessarily the acting. I actually think it could have been somewhat of a documentary. No one actor really stuck out to me. Gwyneth Paltrow played a rather little and insignificant part in my mind. (ok, so not insignificant, rather limited movie time and not significant as an actor) Matt Damon did a good job, but again, it was really the story that made the movie. The unfolding of a contagious disease and the speed at which it can spread worldwide. The whole idea was pretty scary, even working in the healthcare field, I found myself becoming a little germaphobic. (Not to mention both my husband and I decided this movie wasn't the best for a dinner theatre atmosphere)
I think the impressionable thing about this movie was really just the realization that what we see in the news, regarding mass deaths from diseases can actually be so much worse than we imagine. Also, that behind it all the government can be extremely controlling and make our lives seem so insignificant..when they shouldn't.
I recommend this movie more for the message. Again, the acting was pretty insignificant to me...anyone could have played in it and I would have walked out feeling the same way.
Go see it, or rent it, but don't eat while you watch it!
