2014: Week 27: Tammy

General Gist:  A woman loses her job, finds out her husband is cheating, and takes a road trip with her Grandma to run away from it all.

Tiff's Take:
I always look forward to Melissa McCarthy movies because let's face it, she's hilarious.  But time and time again her movies aren't really that great.  I had a feeling this one would be about the same.  Russ actually wanted to see this one because he loves nothing better than a good comedy.  Sadly, both of us were disappointed.  What is it about going to bad movies with Russ?  I swear he's never going to want to go with me again.       

So this one started off pretty funny and had a lot of laugh out loud moments.  But it sort of went downhill from there.  The serious parts just didn't do it for me and the funny parts didn't make up for it.  And although I like Susan Sarandon, I did not think she fit the grandma role.  I mean, at all.  The chemistry between the two just did not do it for me. Overall a bit bust in the casting department.  Actually, just a big bust overall.  My dad even fell asleep during part of it.   

Tiff's Rate: Rent It - only because I like Melissa McCarthy.  If it wasn't for her it would definitely be a Don't Bother.


Deb's Take: 
Melissa McCarthy has never really disappointed me in a movie.  She can always make me laugh.  I was looking for an easy going, comedy, no brainer this week, and with Tiff out of town I took the hubby.  (Little did I know Tiff was going to the same movie too!  We are so good.)  This movie had a little bit of everything.  There was romance, laughs, seriousness, relationships, and even a little action, (ok not much but some).  The movie wasn't anything in depth, it was just entertainment.  Susan Sarandon was good in this, she too doesn't disappoint often.  I liked how the movie took some serious issues, and made them important but not intense.  The whole story was a little off the rocker, but actually could have been real life to some.  If you are looking for some light entertainment, some laughs and a few touching moments this one is pretty good. I also liked that I could walk out of the theatre with some one liners...

2012: Week 27: People Like Us

People Like Us

General Gist:  While settling his father's estate young man learns of a family secret and works to come to terms.
Deb's Take:   Tiff is on vacation so I am riding solo for the review this week.  Well, not exactly solo, my husband picked the movie this week so I went with him. 

The best way I can describe this movie is to say it is a different kind of love story.  You know I love a good love story.  While generally it’s the whole romance that captivates me, I have to say, just a good old story about emotions, love, and relationships hits the spot too.  This movie wasn’t  intense, or edge of your seat, it was just emotionally touching.  I feel like the actors were perfect in their roles.  Chris Pine did a great job, Elizabeth Banks never really disappoints and Michelle Pfeiffer  fit her character well.   Michael  Hall D’Addaro did well for a young kid too!   I guess I can’t say this movie was by any means exceptional, outstanding or over the top amazing, really….I just really enjoyed it.  I liked the message, the story line and the way it all played out.  Good choice dear husband…good choice.

Week 27: Midnight in Paris

It's July.  Halfway through the year.  That means we've hit the halfway mark with our quest to see a movie a week.  And not one week missed yet.  Awesome. 

This week we picked Midnight in Paris at the last minute.  We were going to see Super 8 but in a disorganized turn of events we ended up seeing this one instead.  (I know what you're thinking.  The Sacry sister's disorganized?  Never.  But alas it does happen on rare occasions.)

I had a little bit of an idea what this movie was about.  I didn't realize it was a Woody Allen film and didn't remember that it premiered at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival.  So that gives you a little idea of what kind of a movie it was.  I was slightly prepared for this type of movie.  Not sure if Deb was.

This movie had Owen Wilson and Rachel McAdams.  I like them both and I liked them both in this movie.  This was sort of a quirky movie but I think it fit Owen Wilson's sense of humor well.  It wasn't laugh out loud funny but funny in a more subtle way.  I liked it.  Rachel McAdams played a spoiled, slightly self centered, rich American.  It's not her general role but I think it fit too. 

One thing this movie made me realize is that I am not good with art and literature history.  I felt like there were so many inside jokes about famous writers or artists that I just didn't get because I didn't know who they were.  Makes you feel a little dumb.  But I still enjoyed it nonetheless.  I would say this movie was a refreshing change of pace for me. 

To Sum it up: Interesting concept, a touch of humor and a nice departure from mainstream movies.
