Deb's Take:
All I could think about while watching this movies was.."This is like a Taylor Swift song put into a 2 hour production". That being said, I guess it depends on your opinion of Taylor Swift and her songs. This movie was definitely a high school, "Footloose", "Dirty Dancing" for this generation type of movie. Although, it won't be iconic like those movies from the 80's.
This movie is all about young love. I did get the feel of that desperate, young, first love. The storyline was pretty black and white, two young lovers, a father who thinks the boy isn't good enough for his daughter, a mother who fights to make the father realize young love is real, etc. etc...You know, like a Taylor Swift song. Now don't get me wrong, I am a Taylor Swift song lover. I like young love, I love the emotion, the passion, the newness. This movie didn't really do it for me though. All the main characters played their parts well. It's just that it played too much like an after school special (am I dating myself there?). I think it was trying to be like "Footloose" or "Dirty Dancing", but it missed the mark by a long shot. I guess all I can say is it was sweet, but lacking.

Tiff's Take:
We saw Winter's Tale right before this movie and that was sort of disappointing as far as love stories go. So I was hoping that this one would be a little better although to be honest I didn't really have any high hopes. But I think it exceeded my expectations (however low they may have started).
This movie was completely predictable and we've seen a variation of it a hundred times. There were also things about it that just didn't seem likely. However, the chemistry that was lacking from last week's movie was not lacking in this one. I felt the emotions a lot more. And I was more drawn into this relationship. Sure it seemed a little immature but I'm a sucker for young love.
By no means did I think this movie was fantastic but I also didn't hate it. But I do love Taylor Swift songs so there you go.

2014: Week 2: Her

General Gist: A man develops a relationship with his personal operating system. No seriously. That's really what it's about.
Deb's Take:
I walked out of this movie quite torn. I am a sucker for romance and drama, but this movie pushed the whole idea to the limit. The movie was just bizarre. I have two thoughts that keep running through my mind. Either the movie was suppose to enlighten us about the overtaking of media and computers and how we are loosing connection with reality. Or, we are to be enlightened by the ability for emotions to take on any shape or form and that underneath it all, we just want to feel loved. I suppose maybe it wasn't either of those, but that's what I took from it.
Joaquin Phoenix plays some pretty quirky characters, and this movie was no exception. He is always right on the edge of crazy to me, and he did it again. He was wonderful in this movie, don't get me wrong, but wonderful and crazy fell pretty close together in this one. Amy Adams had a minor role, but did it well. Scarlett Johansson was just the voice of the computer, I guess I didn't really feel a connection with her because she wasn't "materialized". Another hmmm moment.
Although I think this movie taught some good lessons, and will make you think twice about life, love and relationships, I guess I'm a sucker for the old fashioned romance.

I felt like I entered bizarro world the minute I sat down for this movie. We saw this at the Alamo Draft House downtown and for their previews they had these weird retro clips about computers but with a sexual twist. I'm sure it was just because of what the movie itself was about but it made me feel strange. And the movie hadn't even started.
I knew this wouldn't be just a normal love story with Joaquin Phoenix as the main guy. It wasn't. It was set in what appeared to be a futuristic LA maybe? But not so futuristic that it didn't seem realistic. But, apparently in the future everyone will be awkward. Almost like awkward is the new black. Everyone was awkward and it was perfectly normal. Is that really what we're destined to become?!
So in a nutshell, Joaquin's character is trying to get over a bad marriage and falls in love with, for all intents and purposes, a computer. They go on dates and have sex and all the normal stuff a couple does except one half of the relationship doesn't actually have a body. I will say though, after you get over the crazy (or maybe not so crazy) concept, it really felt like they just had a long distance relationship where they never got to see each other. If you thought of it that way it was sort of a sweet story. Unlike Deb, Scarlett Johansson as the voice of the computer, made me connect with the whole idea a little better.
But the bland colors, unfashionable hair and wool slacks that sat way too high on their waists reminded you that this is not a conventional story and maybe too far out there.
Tiff's Rate: Matinee. Can't get over the odd feeling it leaves you with to give it a higher rating.

2012: Week 44: The Perks of Being a Wallflower
The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Genre: Drama, Romance
Main Players: Emma Watson, Logan Lerman, Ezra Miller
General Gist: A story that follows the school year of a shy freshman boy who becomes friends with two seniors.
Deb's Take:
I loved this movie! It felt like the "Breakfast Club" meets "Pretty in Pink". I have always liked movies about high school. Everything is so innocent and new. The thrill (or maybe agony) of becoming an adult, and experiencing so much for the first time. It's also scary, and lonely and sad for some, but when it's not, its amazing.
I loved the chemistry of these actors. The characters were bizarre, quirky, and perfect! All three of the actors were great. I really liked Logan Lerman, what a wonderful job. There were funny parts, sad parts, and happy parts. All those things that make life...Life, and all those things that shape who we are. Yes, we all experience life differently, but all in all, everything is a lesson, and if we make it through we learn something about who we are and who we will be become.

Ditto on what Deb said. Yeah, really great movie. Although I'm not surprised. I thought I would like this one from the first time I saw the preview. It's been out a little while and I wasn't sure if we would get to see it so I'm glad we finally did.
The basic story line was pretty straight forward. A boy trying to fit in while finding unlikely friends in two older kids. But there was a lot more to the back history of the three main characters that made it interesting. In fact, it makes you want to know more about them. Parts of it are vague which I think was done on purpose to let you fill in the holes. That can be annoying at times but worked for this. I'm guessing the book gets into a lot more detail but the movie worked.
I loved all three of the main actors/characters. They each had a special charm to them. I loved seeing Emma Watson do so well in a post Harry Potter movie. Definitely one of the better movies we've seen this year.

2012: Week 43: The Sessions

Main Players: Helen Hunt, John Hawkes, William H Macy
General Gist: A young man who has been disabled since a young boy, seeks the help of a sexual surrogate to experience sex for the first time.
Deb's Take:
I was a little surprised at how many older adults there were in this movie. It was a pre-screening, and I am wondering if it targeted the “senior” population for some reason, because Tiff, my cousin Leslie and I were some of the youngest people in there..(except of course the looney who brought her 4 and 10 year old children, seriously people! It’s a movie about a sexual surrogate, you think the R rating means nothing? Let them see it in their own home where they can ask questions or something!)
Anyway, the movie was ok. I say OK because the whole scenario was set up, characters were just “sort of” developed, and I hated how the ending hit you smack in the face and was anti-climatic in nature. The movie felt like it wanted to go so much deeper, there was emotions and relationships, but they were all so "unfinished" and choppy. That being said, I liked the story. I had no clue what to expect as I have never really thought about a sexual surrogate. I am actually sort of surprised I haven’t though, considering I am an Occupational Therapist and have worked with many clients who are paralyzed. I have often answered personal questions about sexual activity and educated patients in options when disabilities are involved. If nothing else, the movie gave me a new perspective of sex and my belief of what is appropriate and what isn’t.
The acting? Helen Hunt was great, wish I looked like her in my birthday suit, John Hawkes was amazing..what a hard role and character to play! And William H Macy was a funny little addition to the mix. I think this movie is a good one to ponder and think about, especially if you are in the therapy world, can’t say it was amazing though.

I didn't get too hung up on the character development but it did just sort of throw you into the lives of the people rather than building up background. The whole idea was interesting though. The acting was really good. I hadn't seen Helen Hunt in anything for a long time. I really like her. And I seem to always like William H Macy in anything. John Hawkes looked like a completely different person. It was really amazing.
Yeah, the ending was sort of abrupt and the relationship between Hawkes and Hunt's characters sort of left you wanting more but all in all it was a good movie. Not great but worth seeing. (And as Deb pointed out, don't bring your small children to this. Really not appropriate in any way. Thanks.)

2012: Week 30: Step Up Revolution

General Gist: The daughter of a wealthy developer wants to be a professional dancer much to her father's demise. She meets a local boy who's neighborhood is in jeopardy because of her father. Dancing ensues.
Tiff's Take:
We chose this movie because my eldest niece begged us to take her to it. Okay, she didn't beg. She asked nicely and we said sure, why not. I mean who doesn't love a good dancing movie?
First, I want to preface my review by giving you a few facts about myself.
The dancing in this movie was really cool. I'm mean so cool. A lot of the choreographers and dancers were ones from SYTYCD. The main girl, Kathryn McCormick, was from SYTYCD so this was her first acting debut. She did pretty good for being a dancer. The actual story line was well...did I mention this movie had great dancing? Okay, so the story didn't do anything for me. The relationships were a little weak. You know, it's okay though. The dancing was entertainment enough and isn't that really why you would go to this movie in the first place?

- Me and my family are addicted to watching So You Think You Can Dance (or SYTYCD as they say). My husband, my kids, all of us. Seriously. We love it.
- I have not seen Step Up 2 or 3 and it's questionable whether I've seen the first one all the way through. I just don't remember.
- Unlike Musicals, I enjoy a good dance. Just leave out the singing and I dig it.

As Tiff mentioned, my oldest couldn't wait for this movie to come out and go watch. My oldest is a dancer, a good one.. I grew up with my mother who loves to dance. I remember sporadically my mom just turning on music and breaking out in dance. She still loves to dance and has passed the passion down.
This movie was extremely entertaining, and utterly amazing. I can not believe how good people can dance. I am amazed at what the human body is capable of doing. This movie really had some awesome dancers. I think the thing that amazed me the most though, was that the main male character, Ryan Guzman, was actually a MMA fighter in the past. I wonder where he learned to dance? I watched Kathryn McCormick on SYTYCD and it was cool to see her act in this movie. She too is a great dancer.

2012: Week 7: The Vow

General Gist: A woman is injured in a car accident and has a traumatic brain injury that leaves her without a memory of her last 5 years of life. She doesn't remember her husband, or their marriage. He works to rekindle their love.
Deb's Take:
I was really thinking that this movie was going to capture my heart and put me into my romance oblivion that my favorite romance movies and books often do. I was sort-of disappointed. I have to say that the acting was actually pretty good, I like Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum a lot. I feel like they had good chemistry, but I was looking for "The Notebook" or "Titanic" kind of romance. The drama, the conflict and the eventual coming back around to the ultimate love, and I never really felt that. I wanted intense, but it fell a little short of that. It wasn't a bad movie by any means, I just didn't find myself longing for more. All in all, you will get the romance, but don't expect the heartfelt story of some previous movies.

Again, I totally agree with Deb. Two weeks in a row! We're starting to get back on the same wavelength.
I really wanted to just LOVE this movie. I love Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum so no issues there. They do have great chemistry so they were a good match. Another plus. And the story line seemed like it would make a wonderfully, heartbreaking, want to die in your seat kind of movie. But the truth is, it only sort of did. For the most part I ended up feeling really bad for Tatum's character the whole time without truly getting great closure in the end. I just wanted more. Although, I will say I've thought a lot about the movie since I've seen it. Usually that's a good sign for me. But that might also have something to do with the fact that I let my imagination run wild about the "what ifs" in life.
So I'd say it was a decent movie and if you're thinking about going to it you would probably like it but don't count on loving it. As Deb said, it's no Titanic.

Week 35: One Day
I was looking forward to seeing One Day as well. The previews made it seem like it was going to be a really good love story. It didn't really end up being one.
Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess played the main characters. I'll admit I'm not a huge Anne Hathaway fan. I'm not really sure what it is but I just don't love her. Jim Sturgess was someone I've never seen before. I can't say I was overly impressed. I don't know if it was his character or just him but he didn't really do it for me.
I agree with Deb in that this movie seemed like it should have been really good. It had potential to be really good I think but it fell short. I didn't realize it was a book until after the fact but I can see why the movie seemed disjointed because of it. There were gaps and holes galore. The relationship didn't seem quite developed and neither did the characters themselves. It might have been okay if I had read the book first but without reading the book it just left me with questions. I think this was probably your classic book to movie flop.

Week 12 "Red Riding Hood"
Our 11th and 12th week are kind of blending as we saw an early show this week. This week we saw "Red Riding Hood" starring many known actors : Amanda Seyfried, Billy Burker, Gary Oldham, and Virginia Madsen, and a couple new ones to me Shiloh Fernandez and Max Irons. What can I say? I love Love Triangles, star crossed lovers, ya know, all the stuff Shakespeare is made of. Well, never thought this was going to be one I liked, but I was pleasantly surprised.
This movie took place in "olden times", maybe Renaissance times, with a an "american" feel. The story loosely follows the little red riding hood idea, but I have to say that it isn't your typical children's story. Twists, turns, and suspense adding up to a good story line, easy to watch, great development of characters, and of course, relationships. I am not really sure why I enjoyed this movie so much, but it really intrigued me.
The movie follows a young girl who lives in a village, she is betrothed to one man, but in love with another. The village is "cursed" by a werewolf and she finds her self in the middle of the mess, questioning her own family, friends and lovers. AHH all the stuff that keeps me entranced.
It was nice to see Amanda Seyfried in a role that wasn't similar to her other roles I have seen, and Billy Burke, again surrounded by werewolves (Twilight fans!) I liked the chemistry of Amanda and Shiloh. But most importantly, I didn't figure out the ending! I did try, but was questioning my guesses to the end....I love that!
Again, this movie wasn't oscar worthy, the acting was probably mediocre really to all those acting gurus, but for some reason it was just right for me.
Overall I would recommend this movie to those who like suspense, twists and love triangles. I liked it!

Week 11: Beastly
This week we say "Beastly". Basically it was a modern day, teenager based "Beauty and The Beast" I didn't realize we were seeing a movie with the same main actor from last week, Alex Pettyfer. It also starred teenage actor Vanessa Hudgens.
The movie itself reminded me of a T.V. Disney Movie. I felt like it was pretty disconnected and "gappy" as far as jumping from scenerio to scenerio. Kind of like there was a place for commericals, but none inserted.
As far as the acting, I do think Alex is a pretty good "new" teenage heart throb, and Vanessa Hudgens is a good teen actor as well. They did good in their parts. Mary-Kate Olsen was too off and freaky for me. I also like the parts played by Neil Patrick Harris and Lisa Gay Hamilton. I sort of wished their characters were more prominent. I like Neil Patrick Harris' sense of humor, although I wasn't too convinced of the blindness.
All in all this is a good movie for those pre-teen and teenagers. The movie was very age appropriate for my 13 year old daughter and I liked the message it was sending, as the whole "Beauty and the Beast" moral goes.

Week 11: Beastly
This week we saw the movie Beastly. I had no idea going into this movie that it was basically a modern day version of Beauty and the Beast. I didn't realize it until Deb said something about it after the movie. I really need to become more observant.
To start out with this movie had Alex Pettyfer. He was the hot teen alien in last week's movie, I Am Number Four. Strange since I had never heard of him before and now I'm seeing movies back to back with him in it. I guess that's what happens when you go to movies every week. He was okay in this movie. Maybe a little awkward. I definitely liked him better last week. But in his defense I liked last week's movie better anyway.
As I said, this was a modern day twist to the old Beauty and the Beast story. Since I didn't realize that until the end it made the movie seem random, with way to many holes in the story. Kyle, played by Alex Pettyfer, is this rich, good looking kid who believes only the outside makes someone beautiful. This crazy witch-like girl played by Mary-Kate Olsen makes him ugly and says he has to find true love within a year or he'll stay that way. Vanessa Hudgens plays the girl he falls in love with...yadda yadda. You know the rest of the story. (Honestly, how didn't I know this was Beauty and the Beast?) This movie played like a book remake in the sense that you felt like you were missing pieces of the story. And if you didn't know it was a Disney remake you probably were.
I really like good edgy remakes of old classics. Like Romeo and Juliet with Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes. One of my favorites. But this one fell way short for me. There wasn't much of it that worked.
To Sum it up: Weird, disjointed and just not there.
