2014: Week 17: The Other Woman

The Other Woman

General Gist:  A wife finds that her husband is having an affair and soon befriends his lover, only to find there is another lover.  The three woman plot to beat him at his own game.

Deb's Take:   
I like Leslie Mann a lot.  She's quirky, and odd and funny to me.  She makes me laugh and I enjoy watching her act.  I tend to not be a fan of Cameron Diaz.  I'm not sure why, but she just has never been impressive to me.  That being said, this movie was just okay for me.  I thought it was funny, in parts, but I think the story was weak.  The movie didn't have a lot of deep connections, the friendships were surface, at best, and the whole "must get revenge" was sort of out there.  By the end of the movie I think the writer was grasping for straws. I think it sort of fell apart and was just thrown together for closure.  Also, the movie wasn't really what I would call a "romantic" comedy.  It made me laugh, but didn't hold a lot of substance.   It wasn't awful, but I think watching it at home with a glass of wine and your BFF would be fine.

Tiff's Take: 

I guess I'm just a tad bit more forgiving with this one then Deb.  Although not by much.  I like Leslie Mann too.  She's really funny and she made me laugh a lot in this movie.  I generally do like Cameron Diaz but in this she was just okay.  I haven't seen her in a movie in a while it seems.  She seems more harsh in her features than she used to be.  I guess that's not necessarily bad but she seems a little different as an actress.  Not sure it makes me like her better though.  So back to the movie.  There were some really funny parts but it was a little out there.  And yes, it seemed to lose track along the way.  But generally the chemistry between the actresses were good.  I have to say though I wasn't very impressed at all with Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.  Especially with the funnier parts.  He didn't work well for me at all.

So just okay.  Some funny parts but not quite all there.

2014: Week 9: That Awkward Moment

That Awkward Moment

Genre:  Romantic Comedy

Main Players: Zac Efron, Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Imogen Poots, Mackenzie Davis

General Gist: Three best friends and their dilemmas with relationships.

Deb's Take:
I needed this movie this week.  I needed to laugh and pretty much sink into a chicky flicky kind of mode.  The thing about this movie is that is wasn't necessarily a chick flick, it was about three college guy friends.  There is very little that is chick flicky about three guys.  However, this movie was about relationships, and love, and sex, and friendship and MY perfect combination of romance, comedy and seriousness.  Now by no means is this movie an Oscar type of show.  There is no deeper meaning, no hidden messages, just flat out relationship craziness.  In all actuality it's the "fairytale" portrayal that I liked.  Chase the girl, lose the girl, get the girl (although not completely).  The better part though is it cracked me up.  There was a scene that made me laugh so hard I almost peed my pants. It was crude, but I guess my humor runs a little on the dirty side at times.  I will never think of the word "cocktail" in quite the same way.

Now about the actors,  yes I am 42 but I still think Zac Efron is nice to look at.  Also, the chemistry between the three guy actors was so natural.  Not sure if they are really friends but they seemed pretty believable to me.  I also liked the chemistry between the couples.  I liked how the dynamics between each couple was different and  all seemed like plausible situations.  Another sort of hokey likeness in the movie were the cliches and puns.  I am a sucker for one liners be it serious or funny. 

If you happen to see this movie stay for the outtakes.  They are funnier than some of the scenes.  Oh, and another thing...not one naked woman, but a couple naked men..see, chick flick!  I say take a friend (like your sister) and enjoy some girl time, and really, I think a guy might enjoy some of the funny men situations, if for no other reason than the fact that they could probably relate to every situation.

Tiff's Take:
Another love story (sort of) for the third week in a row.  This one was more from the male perspective though.  Meaning a lot about sex and a lot of swearing and definitely funnier than the other two.  Seeing relationships from the male perspective can be refreshing.  And this was.  But.

There were a lot of one liners, which were funny, but it didn't seem like there were any real conversations.  It was a little too much for me.  I liked the chemistry between the couples but they didn't ever really talk to each other.  I don't know.  I just didn't get into the rhythm of the movie.

But as Deb said, there was one scene that was so funny we both were practically crying.  We sisters definitely like a good laugh.  That right there is enough to go to the movie.  But overall, for me, it was just okay.

2012: Week 51: Playing for Keeps

General Gist: A father who is also a retired professional soccer player, works to become a more prominent figure in his son's life.

Deb's Take: 
I liked looking at Gerard Butler.  He is pretty nice looking and has a nice accent.  He looked good without his shirt on.  I think that is the best thing I can say about this movie.

The movie was sort of discombobulated.  There were a lot of known actors, almost like the movie knew it was lacking in some way, so they wanted some big names to make up for it.  I really just didn't like the way the relationships jumped all over the place.  Oh, there were funny parts, and nice romantic parts, but honestly, it was pretty unbelievable.  That is coming from the sister who falls for any romantic twist out there...the sister who falls for the whole "drama" of relationships, who loves the star crossed lovers story, who roots for the underdog...so I guess what I am saying is...it wasn't that great.  Sort of just blahza to me.  I have definitely seen worse but it could have been so much better.

Tiff's Take:   
I couldn't agree more with Deb's review.  This movie really fell short in every way.  I actually can't believe the actors in this agreed to do it.  They acted well enough but the story line was just awful.  I didn't believe any of the relationships or the situations.  There were holes and flaws all over the place.  And the chemistry wasn't great between anyone.  The funny parts were just so so and the "touching" parts weren't really touching at all.  

So, maybe just don't go to this one at all.  And if you have already then I'm sorry that you wasted your time.

2012: Week 48: Silver Linings Playbook

Genre: Comedy, Romance

Main Players: Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro

General Gist: After a stay in a mental institute, a teacher moves in with his parents and begins to work on trying to reconcile with his wife.  Along the way he meets a young woman with issues as well.

Tiff's Take: 
This movie was sort of crazy.  Crazy in the fact that the characters were a little off (or a lot) and there was so much arguing and yelling and things going on.  This might have been a little too much for some people but it surprisingly was not for me.  I really loved this movie.  

Crazy really worked well for these characters and boy did the actors play the part.  The chemistry between Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence was great and I loved the humor.  There was one scene that got me and Deb so tickled we could hardly stop laughing.  I think people were looking at us funny.  Over all it was a pretty predictable story line but it was so enjoyable that it didn't matter at all.

Deb's Take: This movie played up Crazy to a different sort of level.  I think the craziest part, the fact that more than likely there are households like this one in the world for real!  I think I liked this movie because it made me feel a little less crazy. 

I agree with Tiff,  the movie was pretty predictable, and very out there, but there was good character development, good relationship development (even in all it's craziness) and great chemistry.  The movie was funny, (yes Tiff and I were laugh crying at one point, although the full theatre did not seem to find as much humor in the scene as we did) as well as touching.  There was a little disconnect from time to time, however, I think that only enhanced this movie.  All the main actors were great, and I really enjoyed the show.  I don't think it's Academy Award worthy, but worth a good night out.

2012: Week 18: The Five-Year Engagement

The Five-Year Engagement

Main Players: Jason Segel, Emily Blunt, Chris Pratt, Alison Brie

General Gist:  A couple becomes engaged yet continually postpones their wedding due to unforeseen circumstances.

Tiff's Take:
This week's movie was one I was looking forward to.  Some weeks, like last one, we are struggling to find one to go to.  This week was a no brainer. 

I didn't really have any doubt that this would be a funny movie.  I wasn't disappointed.  Best of all, the previews didn't give you all the good parts.  There were so many funny scenes.  Scenes that made me cry I was laughing so hard.  Man, I love a good comedy.  I also love a good love story.  This was a decent love story but it definitely didn't match up to the comedy.  And that's okay.  It wasn't super intense or serious but enough to make it a believable relationship.

I thought the chemistry between Jason Segel and Emily Blunt was great as far as the comedy was concerned and decent as far as romance was concerned.  Pretty much like the movie in general.  There were some great supporting roles.  The sister and some of the coworkers really fed off each other well.  I agree with Deb that this would be a great date night movie.  A little romance and a lot of comedy.  It's also pretty sexually charged so keep that in mind when you pick your company.

Deb's Take:
I was looking forward to seeing this movie.  We have been seeing the previews for some time now and it looked like it was going to be pretty funny.  Jason Segal usually does a great job with comedy, and I like Emily Blunt.  This movie was not disappointing at all!  I loved the humor.  There were actually some moments when I got the giggles and even though the next scene was up I was still laughing from the scene before.  I think the humor was just a little "off" which is why I found it so entertaining.  I am weird that way.  I also liked how all the characters, not just the main players, played on each other and worked together.  I think the comedy was actually more of the highlight of the show, vs the romance part.

All that being said, it wasn't the "perfect" film for a couple of reasons.  It was a little long...I suppose depicting 5 years is going to be long, but there were some scenes that I felt were unnecessary and drawn out.  The comedy was good, the romance was slightly lacking.  The main characters did a good job of playing an engaged couple, but I am a sucker for the highest romance, and what can I say, after 5 years the romance is not so "intense", the relationship was more true to life then sappy story.  I do think it would be a pretty good "date night" movie.  Funny for the guys, without too much chic flicky stuff.

One other quick tid bit, Dakota Johnson plays in this film.  She looked so familiar to me.  She is actually the daughter of Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson...just a fun fact.

2012: Week 16: Think Like a Man

Think Like a Man

Genre: Romantic Comedy

Main Players: Michael Ealy, Jerry Ferrara, Meagan Good, Regina Hall, Kevin Hart, Taraji P. Henson, Terrence Jenkins, Romany Malco, Gabrielle Union, Steve Harvey

General Gist: 4 women use a new book "Act like a lady, Think like a man" to catch the men of their dreams, while 4 men try to manipulate their actions to "beat" the game and avoid letting the women manipulate them.


Tiff's Take:
I'll start off by saying this wasn't a movie I was exactly excited to see.  The pickins are a little slim right now so this one was our best bet.  Although I wouldn't say this movie was a huge success I will say I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would.

I enjoyed the general concept of four different couples with different personalities and how they try to work things out.  It's like taking one of those tests that tells you whether you're a dog, otter, lion or horse.  (I totally made up the animals. :) I don't think those are right but you've probably heard of similar tests.)  I enjoy taking those kinds of tests and this movie reminded me of something like that.  Weird connection I know.  It sounded better in my head.

I did think it was pretty funny too.  Again, not exceptional but I laughed and enjoyed it.  The punch lines seemed a little off at times and I felt like I missed some jokes.  Still trying to figure out why that was.  I hadn't heard of a lot of the actors but they worked well with each other.  The chemistry between them all was decent.  So, my expectations were pretty low but it ended up being decent.

Deb's Take:
We got to go see a movie with mom this week, although I was disappointed in our choices, not much out on the homefront right now.  I, unlike Tiff, was expecting a little more from this movie.  Seemed like it should hit the spot for my ultra relationship personality.  There were a lot of relationship moments, romantic "AH HA's  in the movie, and people were laughing (unfortunately not me really). I don't know what it was about this movie, but I just wasn't into it.  Maybe my humor button was on low, or maybe I didn't get all the jokes.  I will say, it was a little predictable, but generally when it comes to romantic comedies,  I like predictable.  I just wasn't on my movie night game, I think.  I have tried to figure out what the problem was, but the movie really had most of what I love about movies.  The actors were good, there was romance, comedy, a few twists...yet, it just fell short of enjoyable to me.

2012: Week 6: This Means War

This Means War

Genre: Romantic Comedy, Action

Main Players: Reese Witherspoon, Tom Hardy, Chris Pine, Chelsea Handler

General Gist: Two best friends who are CIA partners fall for the same girl and decide to make it a competition to see who will win her over.

Deb's Take:
LOVED IT! This movie had everything, (almost).... Romance, Action, Comedy, Hot men, Hot Woman (so my husband says), and was extremely enjoyable. The theatre was filled with people who laughed a lot. I loved that it was funny, had great action and still had the romance I enjoy so much. It's rated PG-13, but a little more like PG-15 to me. (my new rating scale). Chris Pine and Tom Hardy did great. They played best friends so well. Reese Witherspoon did not disappoint either, she was great. Most enjoyable was Chelsea Handler. I loved her in this movie. She made me laugh out loud quite a bit! This movie comes out on Valentines day, and I will say, I think it is a great movie for a couple to go see. My husband really enjoyed it just as much as I did. Houston, we have a winner!

Tiff's Take:
I couldn't agree more with Deb.  (Finally, one in the new year that we completely agree on!)  This was such a fun movie.  All the actors did great.  Reese Witherspoon was lovely and likable as expected.  Chris Pine and Tom Hardy were perfect eye candy. (I must admit Tom Hardy was a little higher up on my hottie scale though.  Crooked teeth and all.)  Chelsea Handler was crude and witty making a great sidekick. 

This movie actually comes out next week but we were lucky enough to go to a prescreening.  So if you're thinking of going to a movie to celebrate Valentine's day next weekend this would be a great one.  Most romantic comedies are really just chick flicks.  But this one I think would be just as enjoyable for a guy as it would for a girl.  And like Deb said, it was really funny.  There were many laugh out loud moments.  Actually a few times the whole audience was roaring.  You can't beat that.  Make this one a date night!

Week 50: New Years Eve

The pickins' are slim this holiday season! With only a few movies left I was hoping to go out with a BANG! However, it is kind of just fizzling away.

This week we say New Years Eve. This movie was basically the interconnection between about 20 different people and what they do on New Years Eve in New York. There were a ton of well known actors in this film, (look at Tiff's post, it will save me the typing!) Really there was only one story line that kind of "touched" me, and amazingly enough it was the scenes with Halle Berry and Robert De Niro. I guess saying, "amazingly enough" doesn't sound nice, really they both are great actors, I was more amazed that with all the different actors in this film there were only two that impressed me much.

The movie was pretty light hearted, with some laughs and some touching moments, but nothing of real depth that captures your soul. Kind of like watching a T.V. show as the relationships were not really developed too much, and there really was no plot. Just watching the lives of many on a Holiday.

I will say that my 14 year old daughter really did like this film, so maybe it's geared more towards the teenage female audience. Honestly, I was confused why it didn't come out on New Years, or something like that..I think the movie industry is just dying to find something to feed to us Movie Junkies because there isn't much out there right now, they were just throwing us a bone.

All in all, a decent movie, but nothing too special. I would say it is a good mother/teenage daughter show. Zac Efron and Ashton Kutcher may appeal to those tween types and it's a clean show :)

Week 50: New Year's Eve

For week 50 we went and saw New Year's Eve. This is from the same writer as Valentine's Day.  I didn't see Valentine's Day but I imagine they are very similar.  It's about a bunch of characters and what's going on in their life around New Year's Eve.  All the characters are intertwined in some way and you find all the connections at the end of the movie.

Of course this movie was packed full of actors:  Michelle Pfeiffer, Zac Efron, Hilary Swank, Josh Duhamel, Robert De Niro, Halle Berry, Jessica Biel, Seth Meyers (SNL), Katherine Heigl, Jon Bon Jovi, Sofia Vergara, Ashton Kutcher, Lea Michele (Glee), Sarah Jessica Parker and Abigail Breslin.  Whew.  I think I got the main players.

I don't think this movie is intended to have a lot of meat to it.  Because it doesn't.  It's fun and a little humorous and a little touching but that's about it.  If you want a similar type of concept that's done a lot better check out Crazy, Stupid, Love or Love Actually.  Way better done.

I felt like through most of the movie I was missing out on back stories that would have made the relationships more meaningful.  Again, I don't think this was meant to be really in depth but come on.  I think I could have looked past the relationship aspect if it was funnier and just generally more entertaining.  And with all the great actors in this movie none of them really stood out.  The only thing I can really say about any of them is that Zac Efron makes me feel like a 15 year old girl again.  Or maybe that I want to be a 15 year old girl again.  Take that how you will.

To Sum it up: Only mildly entertaining and a lot of good actors with not a lot of good acting. 

Week 38: I Don't Know How She Does It

A little slow on posting this..maybe because I have been thinking about why I wan't really impressed with this movie. I have a had a little time to mull over this, and I think I know why. I resently say an episode of Sex in the City, as well as part of "Did you hear about the Morgans", both with Sarah Jessica Parker. The movie this week also starred her. She literally could have been the same character in all three cases. I don't necessarily think she is a bad actress, mostly that she just is a one character actress.

Okay, that being said, the movie follows Kate, a higher class working wife and mother of 2 children. Her job is in corporate america and involves a lot of travel and time. Basically she is working to be "super mom"..(what working mother isn't)? The movie follows the ups and downs of her marriage, her job and her trying to fit in with the other mothers (who don't work). There were some notable actors in the movie, Pierce Bronson, Kelsey Grammer, Greg Kinnear, and Christina Hedricks. My favorites were actually two not so prominant roles played by Busy Phillips (I love her!) and Oliva Munn.

I won't really go into many of the details, because if you are a working mother and wife you can probably guess what the movie entails. I guess, nothing to exciting or adventurous...simply LIFE.

Although I wasn't too impressed, I will say, I loved that the movie was generally wholesome. The lesson was strong and the meaning was good.

Really, this was just an average movie. Some good laughs, some hearfelt moments, but really a weekend rental when you have nothing else to do.

Week 38: I Don't Know How She Does It

This past week we saw I Don't Know How She Does It with Sarah Jessica Parker.  It was pretty good but nothing super special.  There were some funny parts and it had good actors in it but it wasn't a real memorable movie.

Sarah Jessica Parker fit the role of the working mom trying to juggle life.  Although maybe I've seen too many Sex and the City episodes to think she plays a good investment whatever she was.  And I kept thinking it was set in NYC for the same reason.  The other roles were played by Greg Kinnear and Pierce Brosnan with smaller roles by Christina Hendricks, Kelsey Grammer and Busy Philipps.  They all were good but no one really stood out.  Even Pierce Brosnan who usually plays stronger roles was a little washed out.

As far as the plot, I could totally relate as a working mom.  Obviously, the movie was a little exaggerating than what I think happens in real life but still relevant. 

Overall, I thought it was decent and entertaining for a night but nothing to write home about.

To Sum it up: Pretty funny but didn't leave a lasting impression.

Week 31: Crazy, Stupid, Love.

Last weekend we saw Crazy, Stupid, Love.  Let me tell ya, this was such a good movie.  Amist all the super hero movies, this was a wonderful change of pace.  It was chalked full of great actors too.  The main characters were Steve Carell, Julianne Moore, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone and a few others like Kevin Bacon and Marisa Tomei.

I had a good feeling about this movie.  It looked like a classic romatic comedy and I was pretty sure I would enjoy it.  I had no idea I would love it as much as I did.  First of all, it was really funny.  Not just sorta ha ha funny but laugh out loud can't stop smiling sort of funny.  On top of being really funny it was super touching as well. 

Steve Carell played Cal, a middle aged man who just found out his wife cheated on him and wanted a divorce.  Julianne Moore played the wife.  The thing about this relationship I liked is that it was so genuine.  They had these issues but they still loved each other but they didn't know how to make it work.  It seemed more true to real life then most movies.   

Then there is Emma Stone who played Hannah.  She is this smart, soon to become lawyer that realizes she's not leading the life she really wants.  She meets Jacob, played by Ryan Gosling, who is this major player and decides to see what he has to offer.  And might I add that he is ridiculously hot in this movie.  He's definitely on my top five list after this one.

Both stories mingle together in different ways and it is just fantastic.  I can't say enough of good things about it.  One of my Facebook friends described it like this, "I just found it to be downright charming. Well done, funny, and with a lot of heart and soul."  Well put.  Much better than what I can come up with.  I am just an accountant after all. 

To Sum it up: Hilarious, touching and one of the best romantic comedies I've seen in a long time. 

Week 31 "Crazy Stupid Love"

Week 31 hit the spot!! I was in the mood for something funny, something that would capture my emotions, something leaving me longing for more. "Crazy, Stupid Love" was out choice and it was exactly all of that and more!

This movie stars Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Julianna Moore and Emma Stone. I am having a hard time putting into words exactly what I thought of this movie. After the movie I turned to Tiff and said "yes, that is what I wanted to see, it's nice to see something I really liked again for a change"

It seems like a lot of movies lately have been leaving me questioning if maybe I liked movies so much in the past because I didn't go once a week. This movie made me a believer again!

Ok, so Steve Carell was super funny, he played a somewhat serious role, but his sense of humor was perfect. Ryan Gosling was impressive. I mostly remember him from "the Notebook" (which I loved) and this time his character was different, but still got me all tied up in knots. Emma Stone and Julianne Moore played their parts well. I was super impressed with Emma Stone and excited to see her in "The Help". Another note worthy actor was Jonah Bobo. He cracked me up! Reminded me of my 11 year old son.

Basically the movie had me laughing, it captured that whole "falling in love" feeling, sucked me in to the whole emotional rollercoster of love, life and marriage, and was touching in a happy way. I am sure it only proves I am a little dysfunctional that I liked this movie so well, but it was definately what I needed!

All in all, I would say take your spouse, laugh, fall in love again and remember to not take another day for granted! See you next week. P.S. I don't feel like I can tell you exactly what it is about without giving too much away...so just go!

Week 28: Monte Carlo

Sorry about the late post this week.  Vacation will do that to you.  We saw Monte Carlo for Week 28.  We saw this mainly because of my niece.  She was really excited about this movie.

This was sort of your classic teeny bopper movie that's really meant for girls ages 8-16.  But since I was a girl of this age once it worked.  Selena Gomez was the main actor in this movie.  She played a girl who takes a trip to Paris as a graduation present to herself.  While there she gets mistaken for a British socialite and takes over her life for a week.  Of course, she meets this guy who thinks she's the other girl and falls in love and then has to explain later why she lied about it.  Her sides kicks are played by Kate Cassidy (who I didn't recognize) and Leighton Meester.  Both good in their roles. 

Pretty classic really.  I feel like this type of movie has been made a million times but with slight variations.  But to be honest with you I still liked it.  It was fun and carefree and simple.  Makes you want to be a teenager again with no cares in the world.  And let me say my niece was beside herself with joy after the movie was over.  I guess I remember liking movies that much when I was young.  My mom would go with me and say it was cute.  I would get so mad at her for using that term.  Cute was for little girls.  Now I know how she feels.  I would probably say it was cute.  Oh the circle of life.

To Sum it up: Great scenery, fun plot and just plain cute.

Week 19: Something Borrowed

Well, this week we saw another book/movie. I have read the books (its actually the first of 2) and Tiff hasn't so I imagine our reviews will be quite different...maybe.

The movie is based on the premise that there are 2 best friends, Kate Hudson plays Darcy and Ginnifer Goodwin the other best friend, Rachel. Rachel ends up having an affair with Darcy's fiance. The fiance (and ex law school friend of Rachel) played by Colin Egglesfeld. Also John Krasinski plays Ethan, a friend who has been a friend with the girls their whole lives.

I waiver back and forth about how I feel about the movie. Here is the deal. I know the "WHOLE" story because I read the books. The movie just didnt get the whole story. The movie left out some key developments of the the friends' history that makes you realize Rachel is not the bad guy... The movie didn't play it that way. Some key points are missing and in the end of the movie you find yourself feeling sorry for Darcy. Believe me, if you read the book your feelings won't be so black and white. However, since this is a movie blog, I guess I can't fairly judge it by the book.

As far as no brainer, chick flicks it was a decent movie. Romance, conflict, humor...all that jazz. But, again, I wasn't sort of bummed out. Kate and Ginnifer did an excellent job in their roles. I actually feel like they fit the book wonderfully. Ethan was perfect, although his role in the movie was actually a combination of two different characters in the book. Colin Egglesfeld fit the handsome fiance role, although I felt his passion wasn't up to par. Also, I have to mention Steve Howey, who played Marcus. He did great, but the movie really downplayed his role in the story and unfortunely it didn't do him justice.

I think this is a good rental movie...not worth $10 or more for the depth and quality. As I think I mentioned before....read the book, it will be much more worth your while.

Week 19: Something Borrowed

So, what to say about Something Borrowed.  First of all, let me give you a little histroy.  This movie was based on a book.  That book was written by Emily Griffin.  Now, I haven't read the book but I was planning on it before we went and saw the movie.  Problem was I listened to another one of her books on tape when me and my sister drove back from Montana not too long ago.  Turns out I don't like her style of writing all that well and I didn't like the story line.  All of that added to my thoughts of this movie.

I have no beef with the actors in this movie.  You have Kate Hudson doing what she does best, Ginnifer Goodwin playing the "I don't think I'm good enough" role which worked and Colin Egglesfield as the super hot fiance/love interest.  Oh, and you have John Krasinski as the best friend.  I think they all fit the bill.  And it had funny parts and was generally entertaining but probably only in a chick flick way. 

Here is my beef with this movie.  It jumped out as a movie that was a book first and didn't have enough details.  Since I didn't read the book I felt like there were parts I was missing or background information that would have been helpful to know.  Also, I didn't like the story line.  Call me a romantic or purist or something but I don't like stories about people who cheat on other people (especially when it's your best friend's fiance).  My question would be, "Are you really best friends?".  And my other thought would be if you can't help it then be upfront right away and deal with the consequences.  And who really has a best friend who is so utterly selfish that there is no give and take?

So really my issue is with the book not the movie.  Even though I didn't read the book.  Go figure.  Unfortunately the movie was based on a book that I probably wouldn't have liked.  Take that how you will.  Bad thing is, there is a second book therefore a second movie and I'll probably have to see it just to see how it all works out.  Now, Deb has read all the books so she will have a little different take I'm sure. 

To Sum it up: Fitting actors, quasi-funny but awful story line for this product of a broken marriage.          

Week 8: Just Go With It

Well, I have to say...this movie will not win an Oscar :) I really like Adam Sandler, and for the most part Jennifer Aniston. However, this movie reminded me more of a movie I would watch on T.V. and not in the theater. I did find it somewhat funny and entertaining, but the whole story line was pretty far fetched from reality. Lord knows, if I don't think I could live it, I don't really like it!

Adam Sandler generally has a good sense of humor. I do feel at times he is over the top, but I tend to go more the reality. Jennifer Aniston will always seem to me more like a T.V. star, ever since "Friends", and her characters always seem to be the same. This character was no different, always the likable good girl, I actually liked her character when she was "acting" like the high class wife, as it was more entertaining. Brooklyn Decker, needs to stay with modeling. She was suppose to be the sweet, gorgeous girl, girl next door, but really she was just gorgeous and kind of nothing else to me. (Maybe a guy would disagree)

I think my favorite character was the daughter, played by Bailee Madison. She cracked me up. I have seen her in a couple of my kids' favorite disney shows, but she really hammed this one up. Pretty sad when I enjoy a child better than the whole movie.

Nicole Kidman was also in this movie, which I didn't realize before I went. I wasn't really impressed, she just seemed sort of flighty. She was suppose to be an annoying character, and she was...so maybe she was good!

I guess by the sounds of it, I wasn't really over impressed with the movie. I did think it was a no brainer, entertainer. However, would have been a better rent at home type of thing.

Overall, a light-hearted, nothing too special sort of film.

Week 4: No Strings Attached

First off, would like to thank my two friends Shelley and Leslie (cousin/friend) for attending the movie with us this week! Glad you could come. Tiff and I welcome anyone who wishes to enjoy our journey with us to come to the movies!

The best way I can describe this movie is light-hearted and fun! I don't think I have ever really watched a movie with Ashton Kutcher (not that I can remember really paying attention to him at least). His character was likeable. As for Natalie Portman, it was a far difference from Black Swan, of course, and she did a good job playing the "hard to break" girl. I had a difficult time believing their relationship for about 1/2 of the movie. Suppose that could be what the writers were trying to portray since they were simply "bed buddies", but I didn't feel like they had a strong chemistry, didn't get the feeling they were really in love at any point of the movie.

I liked the humor of the supporting actors, except wasn't really impressed with the father/son story line. Seemed like it was sort of weak and didn't really support the story too much. I wish some of the other realtionships would have been more developed as well.

I guess as I am writing this I realize this was one of those no brainer, simply light hearted, have a few good laughs kind of movie with little depth. I wouldn't say it was bad, just decent. A good girl's night out kind of show.

Week 4: No Strings Attached

So we're now on week 4 of our little "project". We saw No Strings Attached with Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman. Another Natalie Portman movie in one month. Again, I can't say that she disappointed me. Both her and Ashton were really good and had great chemistry together. It was a light, fun movie. It was just your classic romantic comedy. It had funny moments, touching moments and lovey moments. It was pretty predictable but entertaining nonetheless.

As far as the story goes, like I said it was pretty predictable. Although, I wish they would have gone into a little more detail about why Natalie's character had such a commitment issue. But I guess the whole point in these kinds of movies is to keep it light. And it was.

I always forget how much I like Ashton Kutcher. In my mind I think he's an okay actor and a good looking guy but nothing special. When I see him in a movie I realize he's a really decent actor and really pretty hot. Because of a lot of sex scenes you get to see a lot of him too. So that's nice.

I really enjoyed the supporting actors too. Mindy Kaling (from The Office) and Jake Johnson (who played one of Ashton's friends) were really funny. There were really a lot of laugh out loud moments. It was a pretty vocal audience and you could tell everyone was enjoying it.

To sum it up: funny, predictable and plenty of eye candy.
