Moms' Night Out

General Gist: Three moms attempt to enjoy a much needed night out.
Deb's Take:
I have really been wanting to see a good comedy. I was so disappointed last week with Neighbors that I didn't think I could go wrong this week. Well, this movie was not as stupid, but it was pretty boring. I liked the premise, and as a mom thought for sure the humor would be relatable. It wasn't AT ALL. I think where the movie went all wrong for me, was it's discombobulation of scenes. The beginning made me think of "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" with screen pop ups and self narration, then it jumped to a scene from "Footloose" with the church mom's meeting, and finally "Adventures in Babysitting" with a mad dash around the city looking for people and places and everything just falling apart. The whole story was pretty unbelievable, and more importantly I wasn't really sold on the message that was sent. YES, I am a mother and know that my kids are wonderful, are the best thing that could have ever happened to me, and I love them to death...but a night out is a good thing, and deciding to have a night out will not be a mess OR place you in the category of loser mom.
As far as the acting, mediocre at best. I wasn't impressed with anyone, and I was quite bored at one point. So bored I got up and went to the bathroom just to "step out" for a few minutes. Now that is sad, because I never step out of a movie unless I am on the verge of bladder overload and explosion. I think the most exciting part of the movie was the little battle going on between the audience members over some unnecessary noise levels. Pretty sad movie night...

Ugh! This movie was just awful. I thought Neighbors was bad but this one totally beat it out. In the worst possible way. It was supposed to be a comedy but I literally didn't laugh at any of it. I mean at all. Other than being completely boring, it had a horrible message. At least in my eyes, and I guess Deb's too. So is the message really supposed to be that if you're frustrated with motherhood and try to get a one night break you'll be punished by not only having a bad time where everything goes wrong but that you'll realize you should have never stepped outside your house away from your kids? Really? I was almost offended by it. And I'm never offended by anything.
Aside from the awful writing, the characters were oddly mixed and had no chemistry in any way. Really bad choice all around.

2012: Week 20: What To Expect When You're Expecting
What To Expect When You're Expecting
This movie had a lot key actors. Both men and woman. This was one of those movies that follows several (5) different couples yet they all are connected somehow. I was a little surprised because the movie was actually quite different than I expected. (kind of like having children!) The previews really played up the comedy, funny aspect, but I didn't really feel like this movie was a comedy as much as a Drama. There were funny parts for sure, but the whole meaning behind the film and the relationships dominated more than the comedy. I did like that, as I do like drama, but I think the advertisements were trying to draw in the male audience, and I wouldn't be surprised if they were slightly disappointed. I think this was a little bit more on the chick flick side.
I liked the acting, Elizabeth Banks has a great scene that many woman may be able to relate to, and I think the men all did well portraying life as fathers and fathers to be. My favorite "relationship" was played by Anna Kendrick and Chace Crawford, however, a few storylines hit on that sort of , roll your eyes, kind of dumb. I liked the message the movie was sending...are we ever really ready to have kids? Not bad for a pre-screening.

Deb's Take: This movie was another one of our many pre-screenings. We are having so much fun! We got to experience a movie at AMC Mainstreet regular theatre. (vs the Cinema Suites). Very nice theatre, comfy chairs and a nice set-up of stadium seating.

I think I might be just a tad bit harsher with my review then Deb. Like Deb, I felt like the previews were really playing up the comedy in this movie. Going into the movie that's what I was expecting. I left feeling like it was just so so. There were more serious parts to this movie which I think would have worked really well with the funny parts but both were just a little lack luster. The comedy could have been much funnier and the drama could have been more relatable. I don't think I really felt a connection to many of the characters and their stories. Also like Deb, I liked the relationship between Anna Kendrick's and Chace Crawford's characters the best. They really had great chemistry. Week 20: Bridesmaids
Man, talk about being late this week. As Deb said, we saw Bridesmaids for week 20. I didn't have quite as many expectations going into this movie as Deb did. First of all, I didn't get to see Hangover so I wasn't really comparing it to anything. Mainly, I just wanted to get a good laugh. And I got it.
When you go to these types of movies there is always a chance that all the funny parts are in the previews. I felt like a lot of the funny parts were in the previews but there were still some waiting on the sidelines. It seems like it's been a long time since I've been to a movie that's made me laugh out loud. This one had a few scenes that made me tear up I was laughing so hard. It felt good.
I liked all the characters in the movie but I have to agree with Deb that Melissa McCarthy's character really stole the show. She played one of the bridesmaids and she was hilarious. I remember her from a small part in The Back-up Plan and she made me laugh out loud in that too.
The main character was played by Kristen Wiig and I think she was a good fit. She's a Saturday Night Live'r so she has that comedy background which was obvious but she had a sincere quality about her too. Surprisingly the movie had a touching side and she played the part well. Because of this I think it would definitely fit the bill for a chick flick. It had just enough relationship stuff going on that it wasn't just a straight up comedy.
To Sum it up: Funny, just barely over the top and a teenie tug on your heart strings.
