Deb's Take:
This movie felt like it was tailored for a 18 to 23 year old crowd. At first I thought maybe I was just getting old, but then I talked to Tiff...she thought maybe she was getting old, then we decided we aren't old, this was just young, stupid, mildly disturbing, comedy. I actually don't think even as an 18 to 23 year old I would have liked it. The idea seemed like it could have been funny, but it wasn't. I was disappointed because I like Seth Rogan and Zac Efron most of the time. The humor just seemed more stupid than funny. I suppose there was a few places that made me laugh, I'm not THAT old, but I just didn't get the hype from this one. Not a lot of substance. I wouldn't even bother with this one.

Yeah, like Deb said, I thought maybe I've reached that age where young, crude humor is lost on me. Does it happen in your mid 30's? Man, I hope not. This movie sort of reminded me of an updated version of Old School. Do you remember that one? With Will Ferrell? That was funny. This was not. It just didn't work at all. I didn't think any of it was overly funny and some of the story just didn't make sense. Seth Rogan wasn't very funny and Zac Efron seemed sort of creepy. My husband really wanted to see this one (I think hoping it would be like Old School) but I don't think even he would have liked it. I'd be curious to know what a younger crowd thought. Who knows. Maybe I am just getting too old.

2014: Week 9: That Awkward Moment
That Awkward Moment
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Main Players: Zac Efron, Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Imogen Poots, Mackenzie Davis
General Gist: Three best friends and their dilemmas with relationships.
Deb's Take:
I needed this movie this week. I needed to laugh and pretty much sink into a chicky flicky kind of mode. The thing about this movie is that is wasn't necessarily a chick flick, it was about three college guy friends. There is very little that is chick flicky about three guys. However, this movie was about relationships, and love, and sex, and friendship and MY perfect combination of romance, comedy and seriousness. Now by no means is this movie an Oscar type of show. There is no deeper meaning, no hidden messages, just flat out relationship craziness. In all actuality it's the "fairytale" portrayal that I liked. Chase the girl, lose the girl, get the girl (although not completely). The better part though is it cracked me up. There was a scene that made me laugh so hard I almost peed my pants. It was crude, but I guess my humor runs a little on the dirty side at times. I will never think of the word "cocktail" in quite the same way.
Now about the actors, yes I am 42 but I still think Zac Efron is nice to look at. Also, the chemistry between the three guy actors was so natural. Not sure if they are really friends but they seemed pretty believable to me. I also liked the chemistry between the couples. I liked how the dynamics between each couple was different and all seemed like plausible situations. Another sort of hokey likeness in the movie were the cliches and puns. I am a sucker for one liners be it serious or funny.
If you happen to see this movie stay for the outtakes. They are funnier than some of the scenes. Oh, and another thing...not one naked woman, but a couple naked men..see, chick flick! I say take a friend (like your sister) and enjoy some girl time, and really, I think a guy might enjoy some of the funny men situations, if for no other reason than the fact that they could probably relate to every situation.

Another love story (sort of) for the third week in a row. This one was more from the male perspective though. Meaning a lot about sex and a lot of swearing and definitely funnier than the other two. Seeing relationships from the male perspective can be refreshing. And this was. But.
There were a lot of one liners, which were funny, but it didn't seem like there were any real conversations. It was a little too much for me. I liked the chemistry between the couples but they didn't ever really talk to each other. I don't know. I just didn't get into the rhythm of the movie.
But as Deb said, there was one scene that was so funny we both were practically crying. We sisters definitely like a good laugh. That right there is enough to go to the movie. But overall, for me, it was just okay.

2012: Week 15: The Lucky One
The Lucky One
Anyway..to my review. Another pre-screening, I really do like them, makes you feel like you get a little surprise before anyone else. This movie was a typical Nicholas Sparks story. He sort of does the star crossed lover type movie, so a true given that I would enjoy it! I don't want to ruin it for anyone who is planning on going this week so I will just sum it up. Zac Efron is a hotty, and shows a lot of good chest in this movie. I know...I am 41, he is 25. I am more than happily married, but as my husband says...the body is like a piece of art and should be appreciated....so I did! If I was his mom I would have had to have him at 16. Just sayin....
The "love" scenes were a little more PG 16ish to me. Actually, I was thinking about it, and decided I almost thought they were more 17 or 18 ish. Then I thought, maybe I really am getting too old. I just couldn't imagine my child as a 13 year old watching the love scenes. There was no breasts, frontal and only partial back end..but still...pushed the limits for a 13 year old. (I always feel I have to throw in my opinion for all those mothers out there) Really...It was a great love story. As Tiff mentioned, it was a deep, intense, love story. Serious in nature and passionate. I think Zac Efron and Taylor Shilling were great together. I also have to put a shout out for Blythe Danner, I liked her as well! Maybe I will read the book and see what I think after that!

General Gist: A soldier finds a picture of a woman in the mist of war and uses it as his good luck charm. He goes in search of her after he's out. Based on a Nicholas Sparks book.
Tiff's Take:
We got to see this movie a little early at a prescreening. Always fun. Have I ever mentioned that the audience at a screening is a tad more enthusiastic then the "normal" movie goers? They are definite clappers too. I use to think this was annoying but I've grown to enjoy it. Deb and I, on the other hand, are not clappers. We are observers. We love watching all the crazies out there. And I mean crazies is the best possible way.
On to the movie. This was your classic chick flick. No comedy to appease the men. Just plain and simple heartbreaking romance. And oh boy did it have some eye candy. Oohwe, Zac Efron is certainly something to see. (As a side note, I'd like to point out that he is only about 8 years younger than me. It's not super creepy for me to say how hot he is right?) He definitely played the part well. I thought he had great chemistry with Taylor Schilling's character too. It was a very serious, passionate kind of chemistry if you know what I mean. Not a fun, playful chemistry. I would say that is about how the feel of the movie was too. No fun and games. Just a lot of feelings. It worked for me but I'm not sure it would work for everyone. Probably a little too much for those less emotional folks out there. But if a good romance is what you're looking for this is your movie.

General Gist: A boy goes in search of a long forgotten tree in hopes of impressing the girl of his dreams. In the process he finds out about this world that use to be and tries to bring it back.

Tiff's Take:
Like Deb's bonus review of Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, this movie was an opportunity to spend some time with my son. He's been talking about going to this movie and since my husband was out of town and my daughter was getting quality time with her grandparents we decided to go.
I was pleasantly surprised with this movie and pleasantly surprised at how well it kept the attention of my 7 year old. This movie wasn't overly funny with constant kid humor to keep them glued to the screen. For this very reason I was really surprised that my son didn't tap me on the arm halfway through the show asking if it was almost over. In fact, I didn't sense any boredom out of him at all. Now that's a good kids movie!
Not only did everyone seem to enjoy it but it also had a good message. Basically it promotes a healthy environment and being good to the land and all the living creatures on it. I think this movie could bring out the inner tree hugger in all of us. It did me!

Week 50: New Years Eve
The pickins' are slim this holiday season! With only a few movies left I was hoping to go out with a BANG! However, it is kind of just fizzling away.
This week we say New Years Eve. This movie was basically the interconnection between about 20 different people and what they do on New Years Eve in New York. There were a ton of well known actors in this film, (look at Tiff's post, it will save me the typing!) Really there was only one story line that kind of "touched" me, and amazingly enough it was the scenes with Halle Berry and Robert De Niro. I guess saying, "amazingly enough" doesn't sound nice, really they both are great actors, I was more amazed that with all the different actors in this film there were only two that impressed me much.
The movie was pretty light hearted, with some laughs and some touching moments, but nothing of real depth that captures your soul. Kind of like watching a T.V. show as the relationships were not really developed too much, and there really was no plot. Just watching the lives of many on a Holiday.
I will say that my 14 year old daughter really did like this film, so maybe it's geared more towards the teenage female audience. Honestly, I was confused why it didn't come out on New Years, or something like that..I think the movie industry is just dying to find something to feed to us Movie Junkies because there isn't much out there right now, they were just throwing us a bone.
All in all, a decent movie, but nothing too special. I would say it is a good mother/teenage daughter show. Zac Efron and Ashton Kutcher may appeal to those tween types and it's a clean show :)

Week 50: New Year's Eve
For week 50 we went and saw New Year's Eve. This is from the same writer as Valentine's Day. I didn't see Valentine's Day but I imagine they are very similar. It's about a bunch of characters and what's going on in their life around New Year's Eve. All the characters are intertwined in some way and you find all the connections at the end of the movie.
Of course this movie was packed full of actors: Michelle Pfeiffer, Zac Efron, Hilary Swank, Josh Duhamel, Robert De Niro, Halle Berry, Jessica Biel, Seth Meyers (SNL), Katherine Heigl, Jon Bon Jovi, Sofia Vergara, Ashton Kutcher, Lea Michele (Glee), Sarah Jessica Parker and Abigail Breslin. Whew. I think I got the main players.
I don't think this movie is intended to have a lot of meat to it. Because it doesn't. It's fun and a little humorous and a little touching but that's about it. If you want a similar type of concept that's done a lot better check out Crazy, Stupid, Love or Love Actually. Way better done.
I felt like through most of the movie I was missing out on back stories that would have made the relationships more meaningful. Again, I don't think this was meant to be really in depth but come on. I think I could have looked past the relationship aspect if it was funnier and just generally more entertaining. And with all the great actors in this movie none of them really stood out. The only thing I can really say about any of them is that Zac Efron makes me feel like a 15 year old girl again. Or maybe that I want to be a 15 year old girl again. Take that how you will.
To Sum it up: Only mildly entertaining and a lot of good actors with not a lot of good acting.
